LEVELLAND, Texas -
NIACC sophomore Tanesha Edmond (St.
Elizabeth, Jamaica) won the heptathlon at the National Junior College Athletic
Association's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at South Plains College on Wednesday.
Edmond overtook Iowa Central's Shawanna Steplight in the final leg of the event by winning the 800-meter run in 2:22.97. She trailed Steplight by 40 points entering the 800.
Edmond entered Wednesday with a 68-point lead over Steplight, but lost the lead after placing eighth in the long jump to start Wednesday's events. Edmond followed up with a 10th in the javelin, before winning the 800. Her 800 time needed to be better than Steplight's by 3.05 seconds to make her the national champion. Steplight finished in 2:43.93.
Edmond missed qualifying for the 400-meter hurdles finals by placing ninth in 1:06.40. She will compete in the high jump on Thursday.
Men's thrower Trey Taylor (Fr., Bloomfield, CT) placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 52.98 meters (173'7"). His finish gave the men's team its first points of the meet with five. Lance Maxwell (So., Racine, WI) recorded a 10th-place finish in the shot put at 14.88 meters (48'10").
RJ Harris (So., Des Moines, IA) rounded out the men's individual finishes by placing 11th in the steeplechase in a time of 10:20.06. He qualified for the finals tomorrow.
The men also had a pair of relay teams compete on Thursday. The 4x800-meter relay placed 13th in 7:58.17. That team consisted of Harris, Jonny Worley (Fr., Greene, IA), Andrew Corcoran (So., Sumner, IA), and OJ Ojullu (Fr., Worthington, MN). The 4x400-meter team of Eric Peters (Fr., Sioux City, IA), Nako Omot (Fr., Worthington, MN), Brock Schultz (Fr., Rockwell, IA), and Corcoran placed 16th in 3:22.55.
The women also had a number of individuals and a couple of relays compete as well. Darcy Nelson (Fr., Lake Mills, IA) was 14th in the 800 in a time of 2:24.96 and 16th in the heptathlon with 2886 points. Ashley Ubbelohde (So., Waterloo, IA) was 18th in the steeplechase with a time of 13:55.73, and Emma Pogreba (Fr., Browerville, MN) was 23rd in the 1500-meters in 5:53.15.
The women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams both finished 15th. The 4x100 of Hillary Garvey (Fr., Hudson, IA), Caila Jones (So., Spirit Lake, IA), Samoane Waddy (So., Boone, IA) and Abby Muhlenbruch (Fr., Latimer, IA) finished in 51.79. The 4x400 finished in 4:17.03, and was made up of Garvey, Muhlenbruch, Jones, and Nelson.
Both NIACC teams will finish the national meet and their seasons tomorrow.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -
Despite the third round of the NJCAA Women's National Golf Championship not
getting completed on Wednesday due to darkness, all three NIACC golfers were
able to get their rounds of golf in.
The afternoon session, which the Trojans were a part of, had two long rain delays. The Trojans played some of their rounds in the rain, but finished their rounds before it became too dark. The rain delays forced the last 12 groups to end their rounds early.
"The call of unplayable conditions came about two holes too late I thought, but I'm glad we got our rounds in today so we don't have to come back and finish in the morning," NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said.
Mikayla Smith (Fr., Mason City, IA) led NIACC with a round of 83, while Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) and Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) both shot 96 rounds. No one gained or lost any positions because of the unfinished rounds.
"Mikayla played great today, she's gotten stronger each day and followed up a good performance yesterday with a solid 83 today," said Frenz. "Alexandria started on the back nine and shot a 44 before the rains came. She was impacted greatly by the unplayable conditions on the front and shot 52 for a total of 96. Sarah shot a 54 on her first nine holes, but bounced back with her lowest nine-hole score of the tournament with 42 on the front for a 96.
"I've said it all week long, but they have all played as hard as they could, never any give up in any of them....and we're still trying to get a high finish. We all had our goals coming into this tournament, and each one can still achieve those goals."
The Trojans will start the final round of the tournament at 7:50 tomorrow because of threatening weather in the forecast for Thursday.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - All
three NIACC women's golfers improved their positions in day two of the NJCAA
Women's National Golf Tournament on Tuesday.
Freshman Mikayla Smith (Mason City, IA) had the biggest jump, climbing from 64th to tie for 47th overall by shooting an 85 in the second round. She is at 178 strokes after two days of competition.
"Mikayla really
played well today," said NIACC coach Chris Frenz. "She drove the ball much
better and put herself in a position to score. I think she'll be just
more comfortable each day with the course and her ability to score on it."
Alexandria Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) shot an 88 to move up six spots from 55th to a tie for 49th with a total of 179 strokes. Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) moved up five spots to tie for 73rd with a round of 98 on day two. Steinauer has 195 strokes in the tournament.
"All the girls are playing their hearts out and I'm very proud with how they are representing themselves and NIACC here at the national tournament," said Frenz. "We'll go at it again tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully move up some more. That's our goal, keep moving up the leaderboard."
The Trojans will hit the links at LPGA International Golf Course again Wednesday for day three of the tournament.
NIACC Scores
Smith - 93-85=178 (T-47)
Eckenrod - 91-88=179 (T-49)
Steinauer - 97-98=195 (T-73)
LEVELLAND, Texas - NIACC's Tanesha Edmond (So., St. Elizabeth, Jamaica) sits in first place in
the heptathlon after day one of the NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field
Championships.
Edmond was first in the high jump, second in the 100-meter hurdles, and third in both the shot put and the 200-meter dash, giving her 3074 points. Only Iowa Central's Shawanna Steplight, who has 3006, is within 300 points of Edmond.
The last three events of the heptathlon are the long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run. All will take place on Wednesday.
The Trojans also had a pair of throwers compete on Tuesday. Emily Burchett (Fr., Mayview, MO) finished 14th in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 40.97 meters (134'5"), and Lance Maxwell (So., Racine, WI) was 15th in the men's hammer throw with a 42.60 meter (139'9") mark.
There are no 10,000-meter run results available at this time. Anna Buenneke (So., Hazelton, IA) was in the women's race, and Trent Smith (Fr., Charles City, IA) and Cody Manchester (So., Mason City, IA) were in the men's race.
NIACC will have a busy day Wednesday as several individuals and relay teams are scheduled to compete.
Tillo, a left fielder from Sioux City, led the Trojans in batting average this season at .410. He also drove in 39 RBI, had 17 doubles and three triples. He was an honorable mention player last season.
Peterson, a first baseman out of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, hit .390 with 39 RBI, 20 doubles, and had no fielding errors this season. Peterson was named Academic All-Region last season. Both Tillo and Peterson were in the top-10 in the ICCAC for batting average, hits and doubles.
Three freshmen, second baseman and Mason City native Hunter King, pitcher Tim Black of Mount Hope, Ontario, and third baseman Jose Perez of Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico were named honorable mentions.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Alexandria
Eckenrod (Fr., Mason City, IA) leads a trio of NIACC golfers after the
first day of the 2012 NJCAA Women's National Tournament held at the LPGA
International Golf Course in Daytona Beach.
Eckenrod shot a 91in her first round of the four-day tournament, which tied her for 55th place in the 116 person field. Teammate Mikayla Smith (Fr., Mason City, IA) shot 93 to tie for 64th, and Sarah Steinauer (Fr., Clarinda, IA) carded a 97, and is tied for 78th.
"I think they are all a little disappointed with their first rounds, but they're definitely not discouraged because they all played pretty well overall today," NIACC golf coach Chris Frenz said. "It's just a much longer course than we're used to and it takes awhile to get used to hitting those longer second shots."
Unlike other national competitions at the NJCAA level, teams from Division I, II and III all play against each other at the women's golf championship. NIACC is a Division II school.
Despite playing against higher competition, the players are within range hitting their targets after the first day.
"Our goal for all three girls coming in is to get inside the top-60, because that means you beat half the field," Frenz said. "If you look at other players from our region down here, there were only three others that beat Alexandria, so we're right in the mix."
"I'm looking forward to better scores tomorrow and with four days of competition we'll see where we end up. We have to battle a tough course, and hot muggy weather conditions we're not used to."
All three will start their second rounds around noon tomorrow. You can follow the tournament at http://www.daytonastate.edu/golf/njcaa.html.
WATERLOO, Iowa - A play at the plate in the eleventh inning
ended No. 19 NIACC's season, as the Trojans lost to Iowa Central 4-3 in the
Region XI Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Pinch runner Ryan Voves (Fr., Mason City, IA) was thrown out at the plate while trying to score from first on a single by Reynaldo Sala (Fr., Santiago, Dominican Republic). Voves was caught in between third and home when the Tritons relayed the ball back to the infield from right field.
The loss dropped NIACC to a final record of 38-21, and knocked them out of the double-elimination tournament.
NIACC was out hit by Iowa Central 17-9 in the game, and didn't have an extra base hit. Nate Olin (So., Galesburg, IL) and Hunter King (Fr., Mason City, IA) had two hits in five at bats for NIACC, while Sala was 2-for-4.
Pitcher Tim Black (Fr., Mount Hope, Ontario) pitched for nine innings, struck out seven, and gave up three runs in a no decision. Ean McNeal (Fr., Cedar Rapids, IA) pitched the last two innings and received the loss after Iowa Central scored in the top of the eleventh.
Triton starter Will Kenny pitched 7.2 innings and also struck out seven and gave up three runs. Cory Ferm came in during the eighth and eventually recorded the win.
Iowa Central (39-20) scored one run in the third, sixth, eighth, and eleventh innings, while holding NIACC to one inning of scoring. NIACC scored all three runs in the sixth.
The Tritons' Scott Splett had three doubles on four hits in the game. His first double set up the first score when he doubled to right-center field. He scored on a Dan Potempa single on the next at bat.
The Tritons also took advantage of a Nate Olin error in the sixth to make it 2-0. Olin lost a fly ball from Justin Threlkeld in the sun and missed the catch. Threlkeld made it to second on the play, and scored during the next at bat.
NIACC took the lead in the sixth off of three hits and two errors. Robert Swenson (Fr., Mason City, IA) scored the first run off an error by Threlkeld on a fly ball to right field from Olin. Drew Verstegen (Fr., Mason City, IA) advanced to third on that play, and scored during Tyler Peterson's (So., Eden Prairie, MN) single moments later to tie the game. King singled two batters later to bring home Olin and put NIACC in the lead, 3-2.
After a RBI sac fly by Iowa Central's Dawson Porter tied the game in the eighth, had an opportunity to retake the lead with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. After the pitching change replaced Kenny for Ferm, Ferm struck out Trojan pinch hitter Max Waletich (Fr., Fairmont, MN) to end the scoring threat.
Iowa Central stranded a runner on third in the ninth, and a pair of runners in the tenth, but put one on the board in the eleventh off a RBI single by Potempa.
Needing one run to tie the game, the Trojans couldn't get their leadoff runners on base. King and Jose Perez (Fr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) both flied out to start the inning. Waletich kept NIACC's hopes alive with a single to right field. Attempting to put a little more speed on the base paths, Coach Todd Rima switched out Waletich for Voves.
In the next at bat, Sala singled to right field, and Voves moved from first to third. As the ball was relayed back into the infield, Voves rounded third, but was unable to stop momentum and was caught in between bases as Triton second baseman Spencer Mallonee brought the ball back into the infield. Voves broke for home, but wasn't able to beat the tag from catcher Taylor Peterson and was final out of the game.
NIACC went 37-21 this season, were 14-10 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, and were ranked as high as seventh in the NJCAA Division II polls. NIACC will lose 12 sophomores for next season: Peterson, Olin, Nick Tillo (Sioux City, IA), Nate Pilacinski (Gaylord, MN), Michael Bohl (Mason City, IA), Kyle Moses (St. Ansgar, IA), Osvaldo Marin (Carolina, Puerto Rico), Seth Harmon (Mason City, IA), Dustin Jacque (Dyersville, IA), Conor Krommenhoek (Sioux City, IA), Casey Anderlick (Riceville, IA), and Isaac Willenbring (Dyersville, IA).
Iowa Central will play again tomorrow in another elimination game at noon in Waterloo.
WATERLOO, Iowa - The seventh inning was a very atypical for
NIACC pitching in Friday's game with Southeastern at the Region XI Tournament.
Southeastern (36-21) scored nine runs in the seventh inning off of seven hits and a NIACC error to take control of the game and send the Trojans to the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament with a 15-7 loss.
NIACC (37-20) will face Iowa Central, Ellsworth, or DMACC in an elimination game at 3:30 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo. NIACC is now one loss away from having its season ended.
Trojan pitchers, who entered the game with the ICCAC's lowest team ERA (3.40), saw 14 Blackhawk batters, gave up seven earned runs and used three pitchers in the seventh inning. Southeastern scored eight of the nine runs that inning with two outs.
Offensively for the Trojans, Hunter King (Fr., Mason City, IA) had a strong game by going 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI for NIACC. Jose Perez (Fr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) also had a strong game at 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of doubles.
Lee Gealow (Fr., Mason City, IA), who pitched to four batters in the seventh, was given the loss. Gealow (2-2) gave up four runs, all of which were unearned. Lukas Bakker (Fr., Brisbane, Australia) started the game for the Trojans, and, despite allowing some runners to get on base in the early innings, worked his way out of jams and left the game after the sixth with NIACC leading 6-4. He recorded four strikeouts and four walks.
Ean McNeal (Fr., Cedar Rapids, IA), Kyle Moses (So., St. Ansgar, IA) and Michael Bohl (So., Mason City, IA) all saw action as well, and all three gave up at least two earned runs against a Southeastern team that found its rhythm.
For Southeastern, catcher Denio Rondon was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while centerfielder Stan Simmons, shortstop Jose Deleon, left fielder Zach Nichols, and first baseman Brett Sanders all had two RBI. Relief pitcher Kyle Breitner (3-1) got the win.
The Trojans led on a pair of occasions, and were able to hold down the Blackhawk offense through much of the game. NIACC scored in the top of the first when Nate Olin (So., Galesburg, IA) scored off a single by Tyler Peterson (So., Eden Prairie, MN) that sailed over rightfielder Jose Cruz. The lead was short lived, as Southeastern's Sanders hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first.
Southeastern was able to get runners on base early in their halves of the first three innings. They put Bakker in trouble early, with two runners on base before the first out in the first and second innings, and loaded the bases before the first out in the third. However, the Trojans were able to able to get the outs needed and limited the damage to only four runs in those innings.
King tied the game 2-2 in the second by scoring after a pick off error by pitcher Luke Staub.
After Southeastern retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but NIACC turned the tide for the middle innings by scoring five runs and shutting out the Blackhawks during that stretch. Max Waletich's (Fr., Fairmont, MN) sac fly in the fourth scored King to make it 4-3.
NIACC scored three in the fifth inning, all of which came after two outs. Tillo drove in Peterson on a double, and scored off King's double in the next at bat to make it 5-4. NIACC got a little help from the sun as well, as Cruz overran a fly ball by Perez to right and missed the catch. That mistake scored King to make it 6-4.
NIACC added their final run in the seventh when Perez singled and allowed Tillo to score. Then the wheels fell off.
Gealow stepped in to replace Bakker to start the bottom of the seventh, and after hitting Nichols with a pitch, he struck out Sanders. Cruz then hit a long fly to right that Olin couldn't hold on to, which allowed Nichols to advance to second and put Cruz on first.
After two more singles, one of which scored Nichols, coach Todd Rima called in Moses. Moses started by striking out his first batter faced, but gave up four runs on three straight hits for the Blackhawks. McNeal came in to finish the innings, but Southeastern would add four more runs on two hits before the inning was done.
Southeastern shut out the Trojans in the top of the eighth, and scored two off of Bohl in the bottom of the eighth to invoke the 8-run playoff mercy rule.
NIACC will play at 3:30 p.m. in an elimination game against the winner of which ever game, Ellsworth vs. DMACC or Ellsworth vs. Iowa Central, at Riverfront Stadium. Ellsworth knocked out Iowa Lakes 11-1 in the loser's bracket on Friday. Southeastern will face the Iowa Central-DMACC at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the final pairing between undefeated teams in the tournament.
WATERLOO, Iowa - Five players recorded an RBI as No. 19
NIACC took a 7-4 win against Iowa Lakes in the first round of the Region XI Tournament.
Freshman second baseman Hunter King (Mason City, IA) had a pair of RBI, while Drew Verstegen (Fr., Mason City, IA), Nick Tillo (So., Sioux City, IA), Nate Olin (So., Galesburg, IL), and Reynaldo Sala (Fr., Santiago, Dominican Republic) all had one RBI.
Eight Trojans combined for 13 hits in the game, three of which came from sophomore first baseman Tyler Peterson (Eden Prairie, MN), who had three singles and a run.
Pitcher Jeremy Cronk (Fr., North Liberty, IA) had five strikeouts in two innings for the save, and Joey Reed (Fr., Lindstrom, MN) earned the win with seven innings of work. Reed allowed all four runs, but kept the Lakers to only six hits.
Iowa Lakes (23-29), who earlier in the day eliminated Kirkwood with a 6-4 win in the play-in game, leapt out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first.
NIACC (37-19) was able to respond with a three runs with two out in the third. Verstegen had an RBI triple to start the run, and Olin and Tillo both hit RBI singles later that inning.
King tacked on his pair of RBI in the fifth on a double that scored Olin and Peterson, and Sala added the final runs of the game in the eighth with a single. Sala was given only one RBI since Jose Perez, who scored from first, reached base on an error earlier in the inning.
After the first, the Lakers were only able to score two in the top of the seventh. The loss drops the Lakers into the loser's bracket, where they will play Ellsworth in a win-or-go-home match at noon on Friday. Ellsworth lost 16-6 in five innings to Iowa Central on Thursday as well.
NIACC will play second-seeded Southeastern on Friday at 3:30 p.m. That game will be followed by top-seeded DMACC taking on Iowa Central at 7 p.m. None of those teams can be eliminated on Friday.

Jacox was a five-year letter winner in high school, and played at DeLaSalle HS in Minneapolis and at Hopkins HS in Minnetonka in her high school career. At Hopkins, she was a member of the 2011 Class 4A State Championship team, and also spent time playing on AAU teams.
"Chelsey has played with and against the top competition in the country which will help our talented, but young, squad mature more quickly," NIACC coach Kelli Terrell said.
NIACC has signed nine new players for next season.

Freshman Kaili Wells of Topeka, Kan., belted a two-run home run and freshman Carlee Grunder of Wilton added a two-run double to lead the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team to a 5-1 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI championship game May 7 at Fort Dodge.
The win puts the Bears in the NJCAA District F tournament where they will face North Platte (Neb.) Community College (NPCC) in a best two-of-three series with the winner advancing to the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship May 17-19 at Clinton, Miss. DMACC and NPCC will play a doubleheader May 9 in Boone, beginning at 1 p.m. A third game, if necessary, would be played at 1 p.m. on May 10, also at Boone.
Wells' two-run home run and Grunder's two-run double came during a four-run rally in the second inning that keyed the Bears' win. Freshmen MacKenzie Alstott of Fort Dodge and Paige Osterberg, also of Fort Dodge, and sophomore Sydney McCune of Woodward accounted for six of DMACC's eight hits with two hits apiece in the game.
DMACC added an insurance run in the third inning as the result of a wild pitch. Freshman Mari Silliman of Winterset allowed one run on eight hits and struck out five for her fourth win in the Region XI tournament. Silliman improved to 16-7 for the season.
DMACC, which improved to 38-19, dropped a 2-1 decision to SWCC in a winner's bracket game on May 5, and then defeated the Spartans 3-1 in the Region XI championship game on May 6. The loss was the first of the double-elimination tournament for SWCC and forced a second championship game on May 7.
DMACC also knocked off top-seeded Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) and second-seeded Kirkwood Community College (KCC) en route to its first ever Region XI title. ICCC came into the tournament ranked sixth in the NJCAA Division II poll and KCC was ranked ninth.
MASON CITY, Iowa - Sophomore NIACC first baseman Tyler Peterson has been named a Capital One Academic All-District choice by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Peterson entered last semester with a 3.32 GPA. This season, he finished with a .385 batting average, 37 RBI, 19 doubles, and zero errors in 55 starts. He is now eligible to earn Academic All-American honors.
At the district level, NIACC is grouped in the college division with NAIA schools and other junior colleges. NIACC is in district five, which covers Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota.

FORT DODGE, Iowa - The
NIACC men's golf team wrapped up the 2012 Region XI Tournament, as well as the
2012 season, on Sunday with a 5th place finish.
NIACC finished the tournament with a 634 team score, which trailed meet winner Kirkwood's score by 44 strokes. The Trojans didn't qualify anyone for the national tournament in two weeks.
"We are very disappointed with the outcome this week, but no one is more disappointed than Brent Tarr (Fr., Clear Lake, IA) and I feel terrible for him," said NIACC coach Chris Frenz.
Tarr would have placed in a tie for fourth with 149, but a scoring error on his card disqualified him from the tournament. The disqualification dropped him out of the top-five individual scores not on the winning team, which is the standard for individually qualifying for nationals.
"There's not much you can say after that," Frenz said. "He did nothing wrong other than to not catch that the wrong score which was entered on one hole. I guess it's a learning experience, but that's a tough lesson with a national tournament spot on the line."
Jacob Urdahl (Fr., Mason City, IA) was the highest placing Trojan by tying for 15th with 156. Dalton Olson's (Fr., Mason City, IA) 158 tied for 19th, Brandon Wood's (So., Rudd, IA) 164 was 24th, and Adam Brinkman's (So., Clear Lake, IA) 166 tied for 26th.
Mitch Jacobi of Kirkwood won the tournament with a 145.
NIACC will lose sophomores Brinkman, Wood, Brandon Doughan (So., Algona, IA), Jace Snyder (So., Clear Lake, IA), Jeff Arians (So., Clear Lake, IA), and Zach Plathe (So., Algona, IA) for next season. However, Frenz is looking forward as NIACC will bring back some key players for next fall.
"Tarr, Olson, and Urdahl will all be returning next year, so that's a good start," Frenz said. "Plus I think we have some quality recruits coming in next year. This was a difficult ride home and we won't forget it anytime soon. NIACC golf is in a great position right now and we'll continue to get better from this."

FORT DODGE, Iowa - The NIACC
men's golf team has started its defense of the Region XI Championship they won
last year with a fifth place finish after day one.
NIACC shot 319 in the first round, and trails team leader Kirkwood by 30 strokes.
"I'm not sure what hit us, but overall we simply didn't play to our potential and Kirkwood played lights out," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "However in saying that, Brent Tarr (Fr., Clear Lake, IA), Jacob Urdahl (Fr., Mason City, IA) and Dalton Olson (Fr., Mason City, IA) all still have a very good chance of sneaking into the top 10 and getting to the National Tournament in Plymouth, Indiana.
The winning team and top-five individuals not on the winning team qualify for the national tournament. Tarr is seventh with 75, and Urdahl and Olson recorded 78 and 81, respectively.
Brandon Wood (So., Rudd, IA) and Adam Brinkman (So., Clear Lake, IA) both shot 85's to complete NIACC's scoring. Mitch Jacobi of Kirkwood leads the tournament with a 71.
"To say the guys are disappointed is an understatement," said Frenz. "We had been playing to our potential in recent tournaments, similiar to last year, and just couldn't get much going today. The weather was perfect for scoring, but the course played tough with thick rough and speedy greens. It was a very fair, yet challenging course today.
"We aren't backing down. Our goal is to get into that second position as a team and hopefully we'll have some individuals make it into the national tournament."
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - No. 13 (Division II) NIACC baseball
ended its regular season with a pair of losses to top-ranked Division I school
Iowa Western on Saturday.
The Reivers took the first game 12-3, and eked out a 6-5 win in eight innings in the nightcap.
NIACC's Nick Tillo (So., Sioux City, IA) and Robert Swenson (Fr., Mason City, IA) both had three hits in the series.
Swenson had all three of his hits in game one, while Tyler Peterson (So., Eden Prairie, MN) added a pair as well.
NIACC (36-19 overall) gave up four runs in the third and fifth innings. Iowa Western had 17 hits to NIACC's 10 in the opener, and Trojan pitching also had no strikeouts.
Game two was much tighter as the Trojans pushed the Reivers into an extra frame. Jeremy Cronk had a good day pitching in the loss with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Tillo and Hunter King (Fr., Mason City, IA) had a pair of hits, while Nate Olin (So., Galesburg, IL) added a homerun. NIACC scored three in the third and one in the fourth and fifth.
Iowa Western did most of their scoring in the fourth with four runs in that inning. They also had one in the third, and the deciding run in the eighth.
NIACC will next play in the Region XI Tournament in Waterloo next week.
Currently, NIACC (14-10 in the ICCAC) still sits ahead of Southeastern (13-9) for second in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference standings, which would give NIACC a first round bye in the Region XI Tournament. However, the Trojans need Iowa Lakes (2-20) to win both games of their games with Southeastern on Sunday to maintain that spot.
Check back tomorrow for a posting on when NIACC will play in the Region XI tournament.
