Game of the Week: #6 Iowa Central def. #4 Ellsworth, 91-83
The highly anticipated top-10 matchup of the week did not disappoint, as No. 6 Iowa Central took on No. 4 Ellsworth and came away with a 91-83 victory.
Iowa Central jumped out to a 44-40 halftime lead and kept Ellsworth at arm's length the rest of the way en route to an important road win for the Tritons.
Iowa Central was led by a three-headed attack of Manny Lueth, Aleix Sempere and Jordan Cain. Lueth finished with 18 points and three blocks, Sempere added 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Cain poured in 33 points with 11 rebounds. Cain's 33-point performance tied his previous season high, also set against Iowa Western, and remains the highest single-game point total in the ICCAC this season.
The Tritons shot 37.9% from three-point range — eight percentage points better than Ellsworth — and outrebounded the Panthers by 11. That edge on the glass led to numerous second-chance opportunities and ultimately proved to be the difference.
Ellsworth leaned heavily on its bench, nearly turning the tide. The Panthers had four bench players score in double figures, including Christian Johnson, who shot 8-of-11 from the field for 18 points. Another bright spot was Jonovan Wilkinson, who went 7-of-14 from the floor and scored 20 points.
Iowa Central will face NIACC on Wednesday before turning its attention to a potential top-five matchup against DMACC on Saturday in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Ellsworth will look to bounce back against Iowa Lakes on Wednesday and No. 13 Iowa Western on Saturday.
The two teams will meet again Jan. 28 at Hodges Fieldhouse in Fort Dodge.
