Game of the Week: Western Iowa Tech def. #11 Kirkwood, 88-76
With only eight spots up for grab in the Region 11 Tournament, Western Iowa Tech needs every win they can get. For the Comets, their upset of No. 11 Kirkwood couldn't have come at a better time.
Coming off a tough 86–58 loss to DMACC earlier in the week, Western Iowa Tech responded with urgency and focus, gearing up to face another ranked ICCAC opponent on its home floor.
Kirkwood jumped out early, shooting efficiently in the first half to build a 42–36 lead at the break. Western Iowa Tech stayed within striking distance, however, setting the stage for a decisive turnaround coming out of the locker room. The Comets flipped the script in the final 20 minutes, erupting for 52 second-half points and controlling both ends of the floor to pull away from the nationally ranked Eagles.
Western Iowa Tech ramped up its defensive pressure and attacked the paint relentlessly in the second half, forcing turnovers and living at the free-throw line. WIT shot 80 percent from the stripe (24-of-30), including a perfect 8-for-8 performance from Isaiah Lloyd, who poured in 20 points off the bench to spark the comeback an pulling away to a 88-76 win. The Comets outscored Kirkwood by 18 points after halftime.
Western Iowa Tech's balanced attack proved to be the difference, with multiple players stepping up as the Comets seized control late. Caleb Kawela was a force inside all game, finishing with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to anchor the Comets in the paint. Zeb Svoboda added 14 points and four assists, while Nathaniel Vereen-Burton provided an efficient lift off the bench with eight points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting.
Despite the loss, several Eagles turned in solid individual performances. Grayson Wollum led Kirkwood with 21 points, finishing a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and going 8-of-14 at the free-throw line. Chris Coleman provided a steady presence with 13 points and five assists, while Richard Lindsey Jr. added 12 points in 21 minutes. Ben Bockman delivered a spark from beyond the arc, scoring 12 points while knocking down all three of his 3-point attempts.
Western Iowa Tech will continue its push toward the postseason against #6 Ellsworth on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Kirkwood will have a short turnaround before facing another ranked opponent in #11 Iowa Central on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson Hall.
