Game of the Week: #2 DMACC def. #13 Kirkwood, 89-85

On sophomore night in a packed Johnson Hall, we saw a glimpse of postseason basketball from two highly ranked teams, No. 2 DMACC and No. 13 Kirkwood.

These teams had faced off once before where DMACC prevailed convincingly, 85–62.That result lit a fire under the Eagles, who responded with a nine-game winning streak to surge back up the ICCAC standings.

DMACC set the tone early with a blistering first half, shooting efficiently and building a 51–41 advantage at the break. The Bears quickly stretched that lead in the second half, ballooning the margin to as many as 23 points and putting Kirkwood in a deep hole, reminiscent of the first matchup. But as the Eagles turned up the pressure and the crowd came alive, DMACC had to win this one the hard way down the stretch. The Bears steadied themselves at the stripe, finishing 23-of-29 at the free-throw line to fend off the Eagles for an 89–85 win.

Brent Taylor set the tone with a game-high 25 points, burying four threes on six attempts and shooting 9-of-13 overall. Kaden Tate was a force inside with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, controlling the glass and protecting the rim when Kirkwood made its push. Off the bench, Kiki Deng provided the spark that kept DMACC steady, scoring 16 points in 16 minutes while going a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. Kavon Phillips added timely scoring with nine points and two three-pointers as DMACC's balance held up in a hostile environment.

Kirkwood's surge was driven by Chris Coleman, who finished with 18 points and a team-high seven assists to spark the offense late, while Sophomore Day honoree Richard Lindsey Jr. added 14 points and hit a pair of threes. Manasse Kasongo battled in the paint with 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds, helping the Eagles cut a 23-point deficit down to a one-possession game in the final minutes.

The Eagles' rally ultimately fell just short, but DMACC's fast start and late-game execution sealed another statement win. Kirkwood proved it can go toe-to-toe with the nation's elite, but the Eagles head into the postseason searching for consistency after dropping three of their last five games since their nine-win surge, while DMACC showed it can dominate one meeting and survive the next.

DMACC prepares to host #9 Ellsworth on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:30 P.M. in their season finale.

With their regular season coming to an end, Kirkwood will be waiting to see who they will face in the Region 11 Tournament.
