Week 13 Recap:
#2 Indian Hills def. Marshalltown, 94-71
In its first game as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, Indian Hills Men's Basketball delivered a statement performance Tuesday night, rolling past Marshalltown 94-71 at the Hellyer Center to complete an undefeated ICCAC regular season.
The Warriors set the tone early and never let up, using balanced scoring and relentless work on the glass to build control throughout the night. Indian Hills' depth was on full display as all 10 players who saw the floor scored, helping the home side pull away and secure its 15th straight win.
Sawyer Mayhugh led the way with a team-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting while also pacing the Warriors on the boards with seven rebounds. Taj Au-Duke stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and KJ LaMonte was flawless offensively, going 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free throw line to finish with 13 points. Mason Costello added 13 points as well, knocking down 3-of-5 from three-point range, and Ater Manyuon chipped in 10.
Indian Hills was efficient across the board, finishing at 58.9% from the floor while shooting 40.9% from three and 76.0% at the line. The Warriors also owned the rebounding margin 41-26, fueling extra chances and keeping Marshalltown from generating sustained momentum.
Marshalltown was led by Tom Guma, who turned in a near-perfect shooting night with 15 points on 6-for-6 from the field (including 3-for-3 from three) and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. Tristan Christopher and Antoine Glasper added 14 points apiece, with Christopher going 3-for-5 from deep, while Tre'Von Coney contributed 11 points, four assists, and four steals.
The win pushed Indian Hills to 27-2 overall, capped a perfect 4-0 run through ICCAC opponents, and secured a 17-0 home record this season. It also extended the Warriors' Hellyer Center home winning streak to 26 games over the last two seasons, its longest since a 37-game stretch from 2016-19.
Indian Hills has now won 30 straight games against Marshalltown and extended its ICCAC win streak to 19 consecutive games, continuing a run that includes four straight undefeated conference regular season titles. They will be looking to continue their momentum against a familiar opponent, taking on the winner of Southeastern and Marshalltown in the Region XI Championship game on Saturday, March 7, in Ottumwa, IA.
Southeastern def. Marshalltown, 69-33
Marshalltown men's basketball closed the regular season on a tough note Saturday, falling 69-33 to Southeastern at the Student Activity Center in a game defined by early separation and a difficult night offensively.
Southeastern wasted no time taking control, opening the game on a 14-0 run and never looking back. The Blackhawks, snapping a three-game losing streak, kept Marshalltown out of rhythm throughout and held the Tigers to a season-low 33 points.
Marshalltown struggled mightily from the perimeter, finishing 3-for-31 from three-point range (9.7 percent) in the conference matchup. The Tigers also faced a major deficit on the boards as Southeastern won the rebounding battle 43-19, creating extra possessions that helped the home team steadily extend the margin.
Southeastern received balanced production with nine different players scoring. Jaleen Donley led the Blackhawks with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Trevan Krumrei and Kalvyne Eby each added 12 points.
Chason St. Vil paced Marshalltown with 10 points off the bench while adding five rebounds. Sean Conway and Hassan Bush scored five points apiece, and Tom Guma led the Tigers on the glass with nine rebounds.
Despite the lopsided result, the two teams won't have to wait long for a rematch. Marshalltown (8-22, 0-4) and Southeastern (16-12, 2-2) are set to meet again in the first round of the NJCAA Region 11 Tournament on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in West Burlington, with Southeastern earning the home game by virtue of Saturday's win.
