Warriors Capture Third Straight Region 11 Championship
The Indian Hills Warriors beat the Southeastern Blackhawks on Saturday for a third time this season to claim their third straight Region 11 Championship.
In a three-team tournament, the opening round featured Southeastern and the Marshalltown Tigers as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively. In a contested match between the two, the Blackhawks prevailed 78-73 after shooting 50% from the field as a team. The starters for Southeastern took control of the game with four of the five reaching double-digits. Prophet Fields led the team with 21 points and six assists, going 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Behind these performances, the Blackhawks were up 38-31 at halftime.
Marshalltown was not out of the contest yet, though, as they stormed back with Tre'Von Coney scoring 26 points for the Tigers. Winning the second half 42-40, the Tigers fell as the Blackhawks advanced after a great shooting night.
In the championship game, Indian Hills faced off with the Blackhawks. It was the Warriors who started quickly, playing elite defense to take a 31-21 halftime lead. Indian Hills was spreading the wealth in the first half with four players scoring five or more points and hitting 40% (12-of-30) of its shots compared to Southeastern's one player with five or more points and 23.1% (6-of-26) of its shots.
The Blackhawks figured it out in the second half with 31 points as Jaleel Donely led the team with 20 points for the game. His 11 second-half points and hit one three to help bring the game closer. His teammate, Prophet Fields, matched his Donely's 11 points on 4-of-5 from the field. Fields hit a jump shot with 6:58 remaining to cut the defecit down to five, the lowest it got down the stretch.
Despite this, the Warriors were able to build on their lead, scoring 35 points in the second half to win 66-52. Chiang Ring led the Warriors with 70% shooting (7-of-10), 19 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Xavier Wilson put up an efficient 15 points on 6-of-8 from the field while grabbing six rebounds. The Warriors made just two threes, but outrebounded the Blackhawks 38-29. The Warriors took advantage of Blackhawk mishaps too by scoring 20 points off of turnovers compared to the Blackhawks' nine.
Indian Hills will now prepare for Dawson (Mont.) as they host the Bucs at the Hellyer Center in Ottumwa, Iowa, on Saturday, March 14.
