Iowa Western Sweeps Special Awards for Women's Indoor Track & Field
Last Saturday, the Iowa Western women claimed their second Region XI Indoor Track & Field Championship, defending their title from last year's meet. The Reivers also swept the Athlete of the Year honors in both track and field events, as well as the Coach of the Year award.
Distance runner Hilda Chebet was voted the 2022 Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after her performance at the regional meet and throughout the season. Chebet, a freshman from Kenya, has been dominant in her first season with the Reivers. She is currently the fastest in the NJCAA in the 5000-meter with a time of 17:08.71, the 3000-meter at 10:07.56 and the mile at 4:51.81. She is also second in the NJCAA in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:51.93. Her fastest times in the mile and 1000-mile run land her in the top-10 fastest in NJCAA history.
She also took home first place in the 3000-meter run, 5000-meter run and mile run at the Region XI meet helping Iowa Western secure the team win by 73 points.
Chebet's teammate Antonia Sealy was voted the 2022 Women's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year for her performance this year in the pentathlon. Sealy has been consistent this year in the pentathlon and claimed first place in the event at the Region XI Indoor meet. Her score of 3403 also places her at the top of the event in the NJCAA. At regionals, Sealy took home first place in four out of five pentathlon events.
She also won the women's shot put, got second in the long jump, and third in the 60-meter hurdles.
The coach of the Reivers, Douglas Marshall, was named the 2022 Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. Coming off a Region XI Championship last year, he was able to lead his team to a repeat while maintaining their status as the No. 1 team in the NJCAA. Thirteen of the 20 events at the Region XI Championships were won by Reivers.
From an All-Region standpoint, Iowa Western also got a lot of help from the 2021 Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year Nickisha Pryce. Pryce took home First Team All-Region honors in both the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter run. Besides Sealy in the pentathlon, Iowa Western had a lot of representation in the field events. Aliyah McNeil took home First Team All-Region honors in the long jump and Second Team All-Region honors in the high jump behind teammate and First Team honoree Miracle Ailes.
Indian Hills sophomore Aliyah Simmons took home First Team All-Region honors in the 600-meter run and set a facility record with a time of 1:34.44. She was also a part of the Warriors second place 4x400 meter relay team.
Another notable performer on the All-Region squad was Chloe Garcia-Grafing of Iowa Central received honors twice in distance races earning First Team All-Region honors in the 1000-meter run and Second Team honors in the mile run.
Victoria Adu won the weight throw and was second in the shot put for the Tritons. Jade Durfey won the pole vault for Iowa Central, while two Triton relay teams, the 4x800 and distance medley, earned First Team.
