Game of the Week: #2 Kirkwood def. #11 NIACC, 85-68
No. 2-ranked Kirkwood picked up a ranked win on the road as the Eagles defeated No. 11 NIACC 85-68 in an early season battle of two of the ICCAC's best.
Kirkwood came out of the gates quickly, taking a 28-14 lead after the first quarter. NIACC fought back to make it a game once again, outscoring Kirkwood 19-8 in the second frame to cut the deficit to 36-33 going into the break. A slow end to the first half didn't deter Kirkwood, however, as the Eagles came out strong after halftime and dominated the second half 49-35.
Kirkwood's scoring was balanced all game long, with five players reaching double figures. They were led by Aaliyah Riley, who led all players with 17 points. Guard Kennedy Blakely added 15 points, and Kaci Crum provided 13 points off the bench.
NIACC was led by Reggi Spotts, who had 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Kirkwood shot efficiently at 50% from the field and 45.5% from downtown. The Eagles held NIACC to just 33.8% shooting and outrebounded the Trojans 43-35. Dasia Foster of Kirkwood crashed the glass hard with a game-high 12 rebounds. NIACC played good defense, forcing 18 Kirkwood turnovers, but it wasn't enough to propel them to victory.
NIACC rebounded on Dec. 6 with a 66-58 win over Iowa Western and looks to keep the loss column at one as the Trojans host Ellsworth on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in Mason City at 5:30 p.m.
Kirkwood looks to stay undefeated and atop the ICCAC as the Eagles travel to Iowa Central to take on the Tritons on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 5:30 p.m.
