Game of the Week: #2 Kirkwood def. #13 DMACC, 59-53
No. 2 Kirkwood came out of the holiday break and went on the road to take down No. 13 DMACC, 59-53, on Saturday. Both teams entered the game coming off their first losses of the season.
Kirkwood had fallen to Illinois Central by just two points, 62-60, a team the Eagles had already beaten earlier in the season. The matchup marked each team's third game in three days during a tournament in East Peoria, Ill. For DMACC, the Bears were looking to bounce back after dropping their first game of the season to Northeast, a 65-60 conference loss in Boone.
DMACC jumped out to a 15-13 advantage in the first quarter, but the lead was quickly erased by a dominant second quarter from the Eagles. Kirkwood outscored the Bears 21-10 in the period to take a nine-point lead into halftime, 34-25.
With a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Bears made a final push, but the closest they could get was six points as Kirkwood held on for the 59-53 victory.
Kirkwood was balanced offensively, as usual. Olivia Wren led the way with 14 points, while Kaci Crum added 13 and Kennedy Blakely chipped in 10. Wren also led the team on the glass with eight rebounds. Defensively, Erianna Moeschter recorded four steals and Molly Roling added three.
DMACC, which shot just 31% from the field and went 3-for-27 from beyond the arc, was led by Alivia Carr, who scored 19 points. Whitney Jensen added 10 points, while Breeley Clayburg finished with four. Jensen put together the Bears' most complete performance, adding a team-best eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Jordan Valley also contributed four steals.
Kirkwood improved to a perfect 7-0 and will face No. 20 Iowa Lakes at home in its next conference game Wednesday, Jan. 7. The Lakers bring their own 7-0 conference record to Cedar Rapids.
DMACC will look to snap its two-game skid with another tough test on the road against No. 15 NIACC in Mason City on Wednesday.
