Game of the Week: Northeast def. #2 Kirkwood, 78-70 (OT)
Following a dominant win against Southwestern, Northeast took down No. 3 Kirkwood in an overtime thriller, with the Hawks coming out on top 78-70.
It marked Northeast's second win over a ranked opponent this season — the first coming against DMACC, where the Hawks bested the Bears 65-60. In that game, Northeast blitzed DMACC with 31 points in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback.
In this matchup, Kirkwood jumped out to a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained control into the fourth, where the Eagles held a six-point advantage. Northeast once again erased the deficit with timely shooting from its bench. Jaida Allen, Brooklyn Behrends and Ayana Owens combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Jana Lopez came up with a crucial steal with 21 seconds remaining to secure the upset victory for the Hawks.
Northeast harassed Kirkwood's offense all afternoon, forcing 18 turnovers and scoring 13 points off those takeaways. The Hawks also outrebounded the Eagles, tallied 16 second-chance points and outscored Kirkwood's bench 39-19.
Northeast saw Aaliyah Jones, Aweng Akoi, Lexi Wiebelhaus and Owens all score in double figures. Akoi delivered one of the standout performances, recording a double-double with 14 rebounds. Wiebelhaus was efficient from the field, shooting 5-of-10 overall and 2-of-3 from 3-point range.
Kirkwood struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 24.1% from three-point range, and went 68.4% from the free-throw line. Olivia Wren was a bright spot for the Eagles, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, one assist and three steals — her 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season.
Northeast moved into fourth place in the conference with a 6-3 record and will face Central and No. 14 Iowa Lakes this week.
Kirkwood will look to get back on track with matchups against Marshalltown and Southeastern.
