Wrestling: Sallis wins at Kaye Young Open

MASON CITY, Iowa - Kirk Sallis (So., Waterloo, IA) was NIACC's lone winner, but 10 other Trojans recorded top-six place finishes in the season opening Kaye Young Open on Saturday.
Sallis beat Iowa State's RJ Hallman in a 9-7 decision to take the 133 title. Sallis slipped past Ellsworth's Anthony Pagan and pinned ISU grappler Cole Anderson in the semis en route to the championship.
The Trojans next best finishes were thirds from Jameel Bryant (So., St. Petersburg, FL) at 174 and Basil Minto (Fr., Cape Coral, FL) at 184. Both Bryant and Minto lost in the semifinals, but had little difficulty in their third place matches. Bryant won in a 17-7 major decision over Ellsworth's Dylan Ash, while Minto pinned Grand View's Wil Worthy in 1:28.
NIACC placed two wrestlers in the top-six in three divisions. Andres Torres (Fr., Windsor, CA) placed fourth and Ivan Sanchez-Ruiz (Fr.., Gilbert AZ)placed sixth in the 125 division. Wismit Moinius (So., Naples, FL) was fifth and Juan Munoz (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) sixth at 141, and Michael Guerrero (Fr., Eloy, AZ) and Mike Hale (Fr., Garner, IA) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 197 division.
Gibson Metellus (So., Miami, FL) at 149 and Nick Johnson (Fr., River Falls, WI) at 285 both placed fifth.
NIACC will travel to travel to Luther College for the Luther Open next week on November 12.
