DECORAH, Iowa - Wismit Moinius (So., Naples, FL) won the elite bracket at 141, and Basil Minto (Fr., Cape Coral, FL) placed second in the 184 freshman bracket to highlight NIACC wrestling's day at the Luther Open on Saturday.
Moinius pinned Ryan Timmerman of St. Olaf in 6:47 in the finals to clinch the championship. Moinius' previous matches were a 6-2 decision over Grant Suttert (unattached) and a 5-2 decision over Kyle Windquist of Luther.
Minto went 3-1 in a round robin format in the 184 freshman bracket. His only loss was a 3-1 decision to eventual champion Brandon Pederson (unattached).
Andres Torres (Fr., Windsor, CA) placed third in the freshman bracket at 125 after beating Nick Scheffert of Luther, 6-4. Torres' lone loss was to Tyler Schmidt of Upper Iowa, who placed second in the tournament.
Logan Cudd (Fr., River Falls, WI) and Juan Munoz (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) both placed fifth in the freshman 133-pound class, and Mike Hale (Fr., Garner, IA) placed sixth in the freshman 197 bracket. Jameel Bryant (So., St. Petersburg, FL) placed sixth in the elite 174 class, but withdrew from the fifth-place match due to injury.
The Trojans will travel to Cedar Rapids for the Coe Invite next Saturday.
