Iowa Central (3-1 overall) was not very courteous to the Reivers, who are in their first year of competition, as it rolled to a 50-0 win. Iowa Central recorded five pins and held a 29-4 advantage in takedowns. The Tritons recorded bonus points in seven of its ten matches on the night.
"I wanted to see us come out and be aggressive and we did just that," said head coach Luke Moffitt. "We didn't really know what to expect from (Iowa Western) but we knew we wanted to let them know who the top program in the state was."
Iowa Central seemingly accomplished that goal as it left little doubt in the minds of the home fans in attendance. The Tritons opened the night with a forfeit victory at 125 and top-ranked Brandon Wright (133) began the pin-fest when he stuck No. 11 Stephen Spradlin in 1:22.
At 141, second-ranked Terrell Wilbourn recorded 12 takedowns in a 26-11 tech fall victory and at 149 third-ranked Edwin Cooper recorded a pin in 3:54. Joseph Winkler earned an 8-3 decision at 157 over Boimah Karmo.
The Tritons wasted little time in getting back to bonus point victories as No. 2 Colin Hewitt and No. 3 Jahwon Akui recorded back-to-back pins at 165 and 174 respectively.
Iowa Western's best chance at a victory came at 184, but Iowa Central's Christian Mays narrowly edged Aaron Satterwhite 8-7 for the win.
At 197, third-ranked Kolten Kersten pinned Quitin Edwards in just 1:03 and Logan Johnson secured the shutout with a 7-4 win at 285 to end the night.
Iowa Central is now 76-5 in duals against NJCAA programs under Moffitt, who has led Iowa Central to five NJCAA National Titles in his eight seasons.
"I think we did a nice job of setting the tone early and continuing it through the whole match," said Moffitt. "That said, we still have a lot of things to work on, but I like what I saw. Anytime you can shut someone out, that's impressive."
The Tritons are back in action again this weekend when they travel to Waverly to compete in the Dick Walker Invitational hosted by Wartburg College. The Knights are currently ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III.
