Match of the Week: #5 Kirkwood def. (RV) Southeastern, 3-1
Kirkwood went on the road on Wednesday night to West Burlington and pulled out a 3-1 victory over a trending Southeastern squad.
Every set was close, withthing four points, as the Eagles picked up narrow wins of 25-22 and 26-24 in the first two sets. Southeastern continued to battle in the third set, going to extra points and ultimately forcing another set with a 27-25 win. But Kirkwood shut the door in the fourth after a 25-21 clincher.
Statistically, Kirkwood's Lily van Severen had an eye-popping 38 digs on the night. In such a closely contested match, her defensive efforts were huge for the Eagles. Lexi Hearn also had 18 digs.
Offensively for Kirkwood, Emma Meester powered a match-high 15 kills while Emma Cross had 12 and Hearn had nine. Five different Eagles had 10 or more points on the night, led by Meesters 15.5.
Grace Embretson and Sydney Matthias split the setting duties, tallying 27 and 26 assists respectively.
For Southeastern, the Blackhawks had three players finish in double figures in kills -- Lillian Simpson (13), McKenna Marlow (12) and Brianna Hernandez (11). Lamecia Schaerrer, last week's ICCAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week, had 37 assists, a match-high.
Defensively, the Blackhawks were active. Four players had 18 or more digs, including Naho Nojima who had 33. Simpson had 25, Marlow 21 and Schaerrer 18.
Kirkwood kept pace with DMACC and Iowa Central atop the standings, now with a 9-1 conference record heading into the final conference match next week.
Southeastern will face Northeast on Friday morning in a conference match -- which may have big seeding tie-breaker implications if the Blackhawks win.
