Match of the Week: #9 Iowa Central def. #1 Kirkwood, 3-2
Newly top-ranked Kirkwood fell to No. 9 Iowa Central in a five-set classic Wednesday night, as the Tritons handed the Eagles just their second loss of the season.
Iowa Central took the opening set 30-28 after a back-and-forth battle, then carried that momentum into the second with a 25-20 win. Kirkwood responded with 25-19 and 25-23 victories to even the match, but Iowa Central regrouped in the fifth to seal the upset and take over the top spot in the ICCAC standings.
The Tritons' balanced effort on both sides of the net proved decisive. They recorded 50 kills, 75 digs and 30 blocks. Talya Sampson led the offense with 23 kills, assisted by setter Anabel Seaman, who tallied 43 assists. It marked the fourth time this season that Sampson has eclipsed 20 kills in ICCAC play — more than all other conference players combined. She also added 16 digs, joining Meah McCaleb (24), Shirley Monaghan (13) and Devon Rodewald (11) in double figures defensively.
Kirkwood's attack was led by Josie Bryan, who posted 20 kills, becoming one of just five ICCAC players this year to reach that mark in a match. Defensively, Natalee Hartman had 18 digs, Kaci Johnson added 13, and Gabbi Smith and Avery Knoop chipped in 12 apiece.
The win moves Iowa Central to a perfect 11-0 in conference play (27-7 overall) and first place in the ICCAC standings. The Tritons will close the regular season Oct. 29 in Sioux City against Western Iowa Tech at 7 p.m.
Kirkwood drops to 10-1 in conference and 29-2 overall. The Eagles will look to rebound at home Oct. 29 when they host Northeast at 6:30 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
